Howell was thrown several feet and received injuries, which will in all probability cause his death. He received a broken back, right hip smashed, gash in head, left collarbone broken and nose cut severely. At. 6:02 p.m. passenger train No. 9 passed through Hampton. The injured man was taken up and brought to Atlanta and sent to the Atlanta hospital. His mother, Mrs. W. H. Cherry, of Macon, Ga., was notified of the accident to her young son. Howell called continually for his mother during the time he was upon the operating table at the hospital. Note: This is torn out of a newspaper. I do not know what newspaper it came from. I have copied it exactly as it appears. This is Otway Howell Cherry, son of William Henry Cherry and Tero Estelle Licette. Howell was born 04 March 1891 and died 28 May 1914. Grandson to Hilliard Judge Cherry and Martha Wright. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery beside his mother and father and his siblings. =============== ON SECOND RUN MACON FLAGMAN WAS KILLED Howell Cherry, 121 First St. Dies in Atlanta CRIED FOR HIS MOTHER Young Cherry, New On Job With Central of Georgia Railway, Knocked Down by Cab He Attempted to Board - Funeral Today. While making his second run as flagman on a local freight train of the Central of Georgia Railway, Howell Cherry, 121 First street, of Macon, sustained injuries Wednesday at noon that resulted in his death yesterday shortly before noon. Cherry was attempting to board the cab of his train at Hampton, north of Macon, when he was knocked down and fatally hurt. The young flagman was taken on a passenger train to Atlanta and was given medical treatment at the Grady hospital. Every effort was made to save him, but his condition was such that it was without avail. Called for Mother The first cry that rose from the young man’s lips when he regained consciousness in Atlanta was for his mother and he would not be content until told that she would soon be with him. Mrs. W. H. Cherry, of Macon, the man’s mother went to Atlanta yesterday morning, but did not arrive until after her son had breathed his last. The body was brought to Macon yesterday afternoon and taken to the family residence on First street. Howell was 23 years of age and had resided in Macon practically all of his life. He is survived by his mother, one sister, Miss Martha Cherry and one brother W. H. Cherry, all of Macon. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 4 o’clock from the First Christian church, Rev. LeRoy Anderson, the pastor, officiating. Internment will follow at Riverside cemetery. The pallbearers chosen from the intimate friends of the young man. Messars. Charles Mathis, L. H. Dosh, W. H. S. It is copied exactly as it appears. ================== Macon Brakeman Hurt Fatally on His First Run Dies Here Howell Cherry, 23 years old, of No. 121 First street, Macon, died Thursday in a private sanitarium of injuries received late Wednesday at Hampton while making his first run from Macon to Atlanta as a brakeman on the Central of Georgia Railroad. The young man was injured while attempting to board his train as it was pulling out of Hampton. He missed his footing and was hurled a distance of several feet. He was brought to Atlanta later on a passenger train. The body was removed to Greenberg & Bond’s undertaking parlors, where it is being held pending the arrival of the young man’s mother, Mrs. W. H. I have copied it exactly as it appears. -================= Deaths and Funerals Howell Cherry Funeral rites over the body of Howell Cherry, who died yesterday at a hospital in Atlanta from injuries he sustained when knocked down by a Central train at Hampton, were held this afternoon from the First Christian church. Rev. LeRoy Anderson, pastor, conducted the services and the burial followed in Riverside cemetery. Scores of sorrowing friends, who had known the young man intimately for a number of years, were present at the funeral to pay parting respects. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. W. H. Cherry, a sister, Miss Martha Cherry and a brother, W. H. Cherry, all of Macon. A wide circle of friends join with relatives in mourning his death. The following friends acted as pall bearers: Messrs. Charles Mathis, L. H. Dosh, W. H. S. Johnson, M. L. Lester, C. E. Warren, Mack Harrison, E. W. Freeney and Carl Cain.
