The shooting took place on Cotton Avenue in the heart of the business district and directly in front of Mr. Hodges’office. Mr. Hodges died a few minutes after he was carried to the city hospital. Cross surrendered to Sheriff James Hicks. He refused to make a statement. The shooting is said to have been caused by a dispute over financial matters. At the city hospital just before he died, Mr. Hodges said, “I have had trouble before with Cross. He shot me without cause.” Mr. Hodges was one of the best known business men in Macon. He leaves a wife and several children. Cross also is married.
