Several shots were exchanged during the raid. After daylight officers found the body of Ike Holt, a negro who was alleged to have fired the shot that killed the deputy, hanging over a fence, over which he had attempted to climb. There were five bullet holes in the negro’s body. The deputy’s revolver was empty, and it is believed that he fired the shots that killed the negro.
