Bibb County Georgia Obits Mrs. Martha Hammock File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Helen Hudson Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/bibb.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm May 1, 1894 Obituary - Houston Home Journal Mrs. Martha Hammock, Widow of the Late James Hammock, died last monday morning at her house in the upper fifth district of the county, near Echeeconee Station. She was about 70 years old an exemplary member of the Primative Baptist church, a truly good woman in walk and conversation. With her relatives many friends sympathize. The burial took place at Sardis Church, in Bibb County, Tuesday. Mrs. Hammock was the mother of Mrs. Wiley Leverett, and Mr. Leverett was in Perry monday morning when he received a telegram giving him the sorrowful and unexpected news. (This was taken from the Houston Home Journal. Martha Emerson and James M. Hammock were married January 13, 1848 in Jones County and were still there for the 1850 census where their H/H contained what looks like 3 of James M.'s brothers in addition to their first child. They moved to the then Houston County area around 1851- 1852. Got to do more checking on the land for this. He apparently died in the Civil War w/o a will and her uncle Thomas Stripling was administratior of the estate. He died shortly thereafter (War) and Martha assumed the role in her own right. The estate had not been settled at the time of Martha's death. I have been told that this was because of the dower right but am still digging on papers for that. Mr. Edwards assumed the responsibility for closing the two estates.) NOTES: Martha Ann Emerson b ca 1829 d May 1, 1894 Echeconnee Station, Houston County, Georgia (Now Peach County) Her obit states that she is buried at Sardis Church Cemetery, Bibb County, Georgia She and James M. Hammock married in Jones County, Georgia Jan. 13, 1848. They were enumeriated there in 1850 with their oldest child and three Hammock teenagers, probably James's brothers. I think that they moved to Houston County, Georgia about 1852. James is sometimes listed with the wrong initial but according to legal papers, his middle initial is M, don't know what it stands for. Martha sues by "her next friend John A. Hammock" in August 1857. This may also be James's relative. Thomas Stripling is listed as her uncle in other legal proceedings. He is married to her mother's sister Sarah Emerson. J. Alex. Hammock who has the nice marker at Sardis Church Cemetery is married to a Sarah Emerson also. That seems to have been an extremely popular name in the family. I think that J.Alex Hammock is probably James Hammock's relative-uncle, brother, cousin who knows. And of course he is also tied up with the Emerson family. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
