Jones Died Yesterday Afternnon He was first building inspector after office had been created, had been an alderman and was well known. The death of Peyton W. Jones, one of the old citizens of Macon, occurred yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock at his residence 1019 Ash street. Mr. Jones had been in ailing health for several months, and while he was frequently seen on the streets, and up to recently, he was far from being a well man. He enlisted in the Eufaula Light Artillery on January 1, 1861, and after a year at Pensacola, Fla., where his command had been ordered, he went into the Western army and remained throughout the war. He served as an Alderman from the Fifth ward, when the city was divided into six political wards, for the years 1896 and 1897. In 1903 he was elected building inspector for the city, being the first to hold that position after its creation. He completed the term and was reelected in December 1905, but on account of failing health resigned the office in the early part of this year. Mr. Jones was at one time one of the most extensive building contractors in the city, and was later associated his sons with him in the business, giving up actual work only when forced to do so. He then sought to find health in the full retirement from business. He was a public spirited citizen, and when in Council his vote and voice was always given to all that tended to build up the city of his adoption. The funeral will occur from the residence, 1019 Ash street, this afternoon at 3 o’clock and will be conducted by the Rev. Turner, pastor of the Tattnall Square Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. J.E. Seals, pastor of Centenary M.E. Church. Interment will be in Rose Hill cemetery.
