Jones Ends His Life with Bullet Through Brain Leading Citizen of Macon, Having Been Ill for Several Weeks, Grew Despondent and Then Gave Up. He Was One of the Most Prominent Men in This Section of the State. Macon, Ga. Feb. 2 - Ben L. Jones on of the wealthiest, best known and best liked citizens of Macon, committed suicide this morning by shooting himself in the head with a pistol He was in the rear of his home, 864 Mulberry street at the time. The family knew nothing of it until they hear the report of the gun. They rushed out into the yard and found him dying. For some time Mr. Jones had been in bad health, and during the past three weeks he became very despondent. He was an energetic, athletic man, intolerant of inaction, and his illness weighed heavily on his mind. Monday his condition became more serious and he expressed to several friends the fear that he would get down in bed and never get up again. His friends attempted to cheer him up and his business agent and closest friend, Paul E. Wilkes, was making arrangements for them to take a trip to Cuba. Mr. Wilkes was with him a few minutes before he committed suicide, and left him in the belief that he was more cheerful. The community has been thrown into the deepest sorrow. He ended his life without the slightest indication to any one as to what he intended. Mr. Jones was a member of the board of education, was the second largest taxpayer in the county and had long been known as a public-spirited citizen. He is survived by a wife and two children, Henry and Miss Josephine.
