Death of Judge J.B. Lamar at San Jose Yesterday. San Jose, July 27 - Judge J. B. Lamar died at his residence at 407 North Fourth street this afternoon, after an illness of about one month, of enlargement of the liver. He became unconscious last evening and remained so until his death at an early hour this morning. Joseph Basil Lamar was a native of Georgia, and was a descendant of Huguenots who settled in Charleston in Colonial times. He was educated in his native state and was admitted to the bar at the age of 21. He came to California in the spring of 1849 by way of Mexico, crossing from Vera Cruz to Mazatlan. He went to the mines, but in 1854 located in what is now Mendocino County, but was then Sonoma. He was elected to the Legislature in 1858, and was the author of the act organizing Mendocino County, which he represented in the Legislature in 1860. Subsequently he was elected County Judge of Mendocino County and on the expiration of his term resumed practice. In 1876 he was appointed attorney for the State Board of Harbor Commissioners under Governor Irwin's administration, and on the expiration of his term went to San Jose, where he has since lived.
