James Callaway and Col. Merrell Callaway of Macon who have been honored guests in our town will read with feelings of deepest the sorrow the following notice of the latter’s lovely wife: The death of Mrs. Merrell Callaway fills the city with sadness. She was stricken with appendicitis on Sunday night, 9th of May, and taken to the Macon hospital the next morning. The complications that set in baffled medical skill and after a brave fight, she succumbed to the decrees of Providence. Her sufferings from the nature of the sickness were great, but in the midst of them all her faith in her Redeemer shone out gloriously, like a star lighting her pathway to the tomb. At her request she was removed from the hospital Saturday evening, and feeble as she was, expressed such joy that “she was home at last.” She loved her home, her friends and was a devoted wife and perfect mother. But in a few hours she was called to a more beautiful home. And as her sweet spirit winged its flight home one seemed to hear her sing: “I am going home: O’er the rivers tide Crystal white in the noonday sun. I can see the friends on the other side Who the beautiful gates of rest have won; And far and sweet from the shining dome They call to me ever: Come home! Come home!
