Col. Gary William Stahlberg, Sr. (Ret.) died Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at Heartland Hospice. The funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 A.M., Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4074 Chambers Road, Macon, GA. Burial followed in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, 7070 Houston Road, Macon, GA. Father Mike Ingram will officiate. A Rosary was said at 6:00 P.M., Monday, January 15, 2007 in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home, 3969 Mercer University Drive, Macon, GA, followed by a time of visitation until 8:00 P.M. -Gary Stahlberg was a career military officer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He began his service as a draftee on October 20, 1965. On July 31, 1990, Gary was honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel following a distinguished career that spanned nearly twenty- five years. During his tenure, Gary was awarded numerous commendations, of which the most prominent include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and multiple awards of the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal. His favorite and most rewarding tours included being company commander of a combat engineer company in Vietnam; platoon leader of an earth moving platoon in an engineer construction battalion in Thailand; Assistant Division Engineer in the 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, HI; and Director of Resources for the facility Engineer Activity in Yongsan, South Korea. Being an engineer, Gary was especially proud of his successful completion of the U.S. Army Ranger School, Airborne School, Pathfinder School, and Airborne Jumpmaster School. -Gary is survived by his beautiful and loving wife and best friend, Linda (Venable) Stahlberg of Macon, GA. He has always considered the most fortunate event of his life to be meeting Linda in Dahlonega, GA, where she was attending North Georgia College while he was serving as an instructor at the nearby Mountain Ranger camp. Gary is survived by his children, whom he loved very much: Gary W. Stahlberg, Jr. of Alameda, CA, and Amy Lynn (Stahlberg) Tinkler and son-in-law Kenneth Tinkler of Temple Terrace, FL. Gary is also survived by his humorous brother, Richard Stahlberg of Martinez, CA; nephews Jason and Scott Stahlberg; and his ever-bubbly sister Barbara (Stahlberg) Wolfrom, together with brother-in-law Fred; and nieces Tina and Angie Wolfrom. A listing of Gary's surviving in-laws and family through his wife Linda would be quite extensive and unfortunately must be limited here to siblings and spouses. These include James O. Jr. and Helen Venable (Lizella, GA); Irene Venable (Macon, GA); Linda Henry Venable (Las Cruces, NM); Anne Tucker (Macon, GA); Charles and Lou Merle Venable (Warner Robins, GA); and Glenn and Barbara Venable (Milledgeville, GA). -A devout Catholic, Gary most recently served as a member of the parish council of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Macon, GA. Gary greatly appreciated the love, prayers, and support of his family and many friends. -In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church Building Fund, 4074 Chambers Road, Macon, GA 31206. -Monroe County Memorial Chapel had charge of arrangements.
