Stevens departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 following a courageous struggle with an extended pervasive illness, DLBCL Non-Hodgkin's Disease. Mrs. Stevens was born to the late Hennie Harden and the late Herman Harden in Twiggs County. She was married to the late Elmer L. Stevens for almost fifty years. She lived in Byron most of her life. She is survived by three daughters: Joyce (James) McLeod, Ft. Valley, GA, Judy (Roscoe) Cross, Jackson, GA and Cathie (Jimmy) Borders, Macon, GA. -She was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Georgia where she was enrolled in the Esther Bible Sunday School Class. She was also a former member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Macon where she was very active with the Young N Heart. She taught Sunday School, Girls Auxiliary, Sunbeams and was involved with WMU. She helped in the Church Nursery from 1953-1969. -She graduated from Dudley M. Hughes High School in 1971 and was a retired employee of 41 and Weiss Theaters. In the 1960's she hosted many (neighborhood) cottage prayer meetings. She was the epitome of a cherished Christian spirit. Her testimony was that God had called her to become a missionary to the elderly, helping to make their final years more pleasurable. She ministered to numerous residents who were without family by volunteering at a local nursing home in Macon. She would benevolently make dinner for those who were ill in the neighborhood. She comforted the dying by her tranquil presence. She was a dedicated caregiver, not only by her deeds but her altruistic empathy. "Ms. Edna" was well known for her humility and unassuming love. Her legacy of kindness will continue in every life she touched. -Survivors other than her daughters are six grandchildren, Jimmy (Cheryl) McLeod, Debbie McLeod, Danny (Shirley) McLeod, Tammy (Doug) Brown, Sgt. James Borders, Jr., (Ft. Hood) Killeen, Texas and Tanya (Drake) Mathews, Byron, GA, seven great grandchildren, Kristen, Jennifer, Kyle, Brian, Andy, Madison and her one pound miracle, Mallory Hope Mathews; a close niece, Nadine Stevens Rowland, sisters, Hazel Collins and Elizabeth Harden and a host of other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one grandchild, Michael Sidney McLeod who died at the age of 6 months in 1964. -Special friends and caregivers are Julie Heishman (sitter), Phyllis Walters and Hazel Colson from Heart of Georgia Hospice, her extended family at Elberta Health Care, and her personal physician Dr. Alice House. -Family met with friends at the funeral home from 6 - 8 p.m., on Thursday, December 14th and may be contacted at 478- 788-2988. Condolences may be sent to POB 10231, Macon, Georgia 31297. - Services will be at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono on Friday, December 15th at 2 p.m. The Rev. Sam Waldron, the Rev. Gerri Golden and Pastor Ray Pruitt will officiate. Interment will be at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens immediately after the service. -The family requests that in lieu of flowers, tax exempt donations be given to the Patient Access Network Foundation, a non-profit foundation that helps subsidize high medical costs after insurance benefits have been exhausted for the prevention and treatment of Respiratory Syncytial Virus.
