Hughes, Mrs. Hughes and their daughter, Miss Hennilu, arrived in Macon last night by train from Athens, where they witnessed the marriage yesterday of H.L. Dennard Hughes, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hughes to Miss Agnes Goss, daughter of Dr. J. Hamilton Goss. The party made the trip to Athens by motor, but because of the heavy rains the automobile had to be abandoned at Athens, and the party returned here to spend the night before going to Danville. The former Congressman said he had received many letters from friends throughout the state in regard to a published report that he has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Governorship. Asked last night if he would become a candidate, Mr. Hughes said: “Oil and water will not mix; neither will grass and politics. I am giving all of my attention at the present moment to grass and the boll weevil. Yes, it is true that I have received many letters from my friends throughout the state urging me to get into the race.” The former Congressman says that the rains have been much heavier at Danville during the past month than in Macon. He said that his fields are full of grass and his watermelon crop will not be as good as usual.
