He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Macon, Bibb County, GA.) Date of will: Feb. 12, 1889 in Bibb County, GA Will proven: by E. C. VanValkenburg on 20 March 1889. Heirs named in will: wife Willa F.; five children-Eddie, Mary, Mattie, Sallie and Hattie. The will also stated that the first four children were born of Charles’ first wife. Though her name is not given in the will, we know it to be Josephine Catherine Dent, daughter of John Washington Dent and Elizabeth Hoy Dent. Josie died in 1882. Property named in will: ‘my home place on which is located my dwelling house, mill, gins, saw mill, &c, containing ten acres more or less and lying on the East side of Echeconnee Creek in Bibb County Ga and one hundred & eighty acres more or less lying on the West side of said creek in Crawford County, and one hundred acres of land lying in Crawford County and known as the land place adjoining lands of Ben Tidwell, Jno. Smith, Dorse Marshall & Bry Avara. Sixty-two acres in 3rd District Crawford County, joining lands of Bry Avara, Nancy Walker & Kattie Averett and fifty acres of land known as the Watt Walker place, joining lands of Mingo Fowler and others. Also all of my personal property consisting of merchandise & fixtures in my storehouse, mules, cattle, hogs and live stock of all kinds, gins, engines & machinery of all kinds, shop tools, carpenter tools, farming tools, corn, fodder, buggies, wagons every other species of personal property of which I may die seized and possessed including household and kitchen furniture and cash money to be expended upon and equally divided between my said wife and children as hereinafter set forth, share and share alike.’ He went on to exclude any interest he held in the property that belonged to his first wife, ‘known as the Jordan place in Crawford County, that interest I give and bequeath to my first named four children born of my said first wife’. He stipulated that his executor was to use the estate for the maintenance & support of his wife & children and for the education of the children with ever ything to be settled & equally divided when the youngest child reached 21 years of age, although the executor could dole out each child’s inheritance as he or she became of age if he thought it okay. Charles also stated that his wife was to receive an equal share in lieu of a dower. If she chose to receive a dower, then she would receive that and no more of the estate. Executor: brother, E. C. VanValkenburg (this is Edward Church VanValkenburg, 1846-1894) Witnessed by: F. W. McAfee (Charles’ brother in law). H. McAfee (Henrietta VanValkenburg McAfee, Charles’ sister) and L. D. Moore. Will signed: C. W. VanValkenburg, M.D. The will was proven by the executor, E. C. VanValkenburg and recorded by Ordinary, C. M. Wiley on 23 March 1889. Later records indicate Arthur B. VanValkenburg, half brother to E. C. and Charles, married the widow, Willa F. VanValkenburg in Bibb County, GA on April 5, 1894 and applied for guardianship of his nieces, Sallie J., Mattie L., and Mary E. (all still under age) on March 5, 1894.
