Force, 1837, pp. 259-256. HON. ARCHIBALD BULLOCK Hon. Archibald Bullock was one of the four bold individuals, who signed an address in the public papers, on the 14th July, 1774, requesting the people to meet on the 27th instant, to devise means to resist the encroachments of the British Parliament. He was elected member of Congress in 1775. He was President of the Provincial Council of Georgia in 1776, and received from John Hancock, President of Congress, the news, by express, of the declaration of independence, on the 10th August, and soon after issued his proclamation. (Reprinted 1968 Heritage Papers, Danielsville, GA) BULLOCH COUNTY This division of the State was laid out in 1796, and named after Archibald Bulloch, Governor of Georgia. STATESBOROUGH is the county site; 120 miles from Milledgeville. Cases of longevity are: Mrs. Driggers and Mrs. Cannon, both of whom were said to have been 104 years at their death; Mrs. Everitt, 106; Mr. Rimes died at 92; William Kirby, 90; Joseph Hodges, 80; Three years ago there were living Mrs. Shepherd, 106; Mr. Donaldson, 82; Nathan Brewton, 92; Mr. Kicklighter, 80; Mrs. Polly Williams, 90; Mrs. Hagan, 80. Among the early settlers of this county were: William and Benjamin Cook, Barnard Michael, John and Jehu Everitt, Andrew E. Wells, George Threadcraft, Charles McCall, Alexander Stewart, M. Burkhalter, A. McKenzie, Daniel and Arthur Lot, Wm. Mezell, Lewis Lanier, Clement Lanier, Daniel Hendrix, N. Sweat, Mr. Oliff, Mr. Shorter, John Groover, Wm. Rowe, the families of the Hodges, Cones, Hagans, &c. APPENDIX: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES "The author conceived that a short biographical sketch of the individuals after whom the several counties were named, would furnish an instructive and pleasing appendage to his topographical work... Acquainted with the intimate friends of some of the 'venerable dead,' he has been furnished with sufficient materials to enlarge on their character...
