SOURCE: CENTENNIAL EDITION - THE ADEL NEWS, 1973, p. 6-F Robert Crawford Woodward was born in Berrien County in the vicinity of Ray City, Georgia, on December 06, 1867. In his teens, he resolved to get a better education than the school afforded in his home county, so he made application and was accepted at the present Bowling Green College of Business Administration, Bowling Green, KY. Studying there for several years, he then returned to South Georgia and became a teacher at the Adel Institute. On August 25, 1892, he was married to Miss Ida Parrish, oldest daughter of John A. and Susan [Mathis] Parrish of Berrien County. Adel was to be their home for many years. Probably in 1896-1897, R. C. Woodard moved his family to Augusta, Georgia, to study medicine at the Georgia Medical College. Upon his graduation, Dr. Woodward returned to Adel and began his practice. In those days a doctor saw his patients by making house calls, and Dr. Woodward drove many miles in his drawn buggy in rural Berrien and later Cook County… Dr. Woodward said that it was his first day of practice that impressed him with the great responsibility he had. His first call was to a child very ill, who was believed to have diphtheria. Dr. Woodward took his medical books with him on this call, to study and to prepare to make a correct diagnosis. He never ceased to study to keep himself advised of the latest discoveries of medicines and new medical sciences… For 22 years, Dr. Woodward practiced medicine in Adel and was prominently identified as a leader in medicine, education, and in the political life of the section. He was one of the citizens’ who strongly advocated that a new county be made from the western part of Berrien, with Adel to be made the county seat. He worked diligently to secure passage of the legislative act that procured the county in 1918, and he later served as Representative of Cook County in the General Assembly… Dr. Woodward died in 1949 at 81 years old. His life was dedicated in service to his fellowmen. He was truly a doctor of the old school, but always one with young ideas. Mrs. Woodward preceded him death… ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
