DENNARD KILLED KENDRICK.
 
And Then Made His Escape After Being 
Tried and Committed.
 
  On Saturday morning, April 17, a 
difficulty occurred between Peter 
Dennard and Simon Kendrick, tenants of 
the farm of Hon. J. J. Dennard and Mr. 
J. O. Brawner, on Bluff Creek, which 
resulted in the killing of Simon 
Kendrick by Peter Dennard, a shot gun 
being the weapon used. A warrant was 
immediately sworn out before C.McKinney 
and officers put in pursuit of Dennard. 
  They failed to capture him until  
Monday, when he came and asked for a 
trial before Judge McKinney. The case 
was arranged for Tuesday morning and 
Judge McKinney invited Judge J. A. 
Reynolds, of Finleyson, to sit with him 
in trying the case, and Hon. J. J. 
Dennard to act as secretary. A long and 
tedious trial was gone through with 
every bit of testimony being written 
down. 
  A large crowd was present. The 
officers retired to a private room to 
consult and arrive at a verdict. After 
considering the case and weighing the 
evidence they found him guilty of 
voluntary manslaughter and while they 
were fixing up the papers to send him 
to jail he got wind of the verdict and 
unexpected to the officers he ran away, 
taking to the swamp, and made his 
escape. 
  He was committed to jail to await 
trial as the August term of superior 
court had he not escaped.
