Mr. Hart was found dead in his lot Wednesday morning and Mrs. Hart died Thursday night from injuries received at the hands of the assassins. Everything indicates that the killing was done at daybreak. It is presumed that robbery was the object as Mr. Hart was a quiet, inoffensive citizen, liked and respected by every one who knew him. He generally kept money at his house. Excitement is rife in that part of the county. Two negroes were arrested and brought to Cochran jail, but were taken out and carried to the scene of murder by a large crowd of determined men. One negro resisting arrest ran against a stump and killed himself. It is now reported that a negro from Empire has confessed to a conspiracy of fifteen negroes, and says the murder had been planned for some time. Seven of these negroes are under arrest. Mr. Hart was about sixty years old. AN AGED COUPLE MURDERED. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hart Clubbed to Death. By Two Negroes At Their Home Near Frazier-Assassins Killed and Burned by enraged Citizens. Another crime almost as horrifying as the brutal assault made on Mr. and Mrs. Martin Livingston a few weeks ago in the upper part of the county occurred near Frazier early Wednesday morning when Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hart were foully murdered by Curry Roberson and John Henry, two negroes. Mr. Hart went out to his lot about daylight to feed his hogs when he was struck on the head with a club ax and instantly killed. His body was found lying in the stall with his skull crushed in and near by was a basket from which he had been giving corn to the hogs. Mrs. Hart was attacked in a like manner while in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She was found lying on the floor in an unconscious condition with a fork in her hand and her breakfast destroyed by the fire. Mrs. Hart lingered until seven o'clock Wednesday evening when she died from the effects of her injuries. She never spoke or knew anything after the attack. The weapon used by the assassins was a club axe which was found Thursday in a plum orchard some distance away. Mr. Graham, a neighbor, called at the Hart home early Wednesday morning and was the first to discover the murder. The assassins heard him as he came through the field whistling and singing and left before they had time to rob the house, which they intended to do and for which purpose they committed the crime. When news of the tragedy was received in the city Sheriff Rogers and Constables Home and Harp left immediately for the scene and with the aid of others soon located the murderers and arrested them. Later they were taken from the custody of the officers by the enraged citizens and shot to death afar which their bodies were burned. Both negroes lived in the community not far from the Hart home and were familiar with its surrounds and knew that he kept money in his house. Two other negroes were arrested on suspicion but they were turned loose for lack of evidence to connect them with the crime. Mr. and Mrs. Hart were both about the same age, between sixty-five and seventy years. They were well-to-do and highly respected people and their tragic ending is deplored by all who knew them. It is said that considerable money was found hid away in their home, the amount being estimated at from three to fifteen hundred dollars.
