He Was Trying To Arrest Jim Harris When The Latter Attacked Him. Last Friday morning between five and six hundred negroes, members of the Early Morning Star Society,, arrived from Macon to send the day picnicking in the city. Jim Harris, a yellow negro who accompanied the excursionists, was tanked up on booze and soon got into a difficulty with another negro whom he slashed with knife. Deputy Sheriff Joe An Home was sent for to go out to the picnic grounds near the cemetery and arrest Harris. Deputy Home was soon on the scene and after arresting Harris started with him to the barracks when two other negroes, John Laster and Ed Thurman, came up and 359cursed the officer, using the vilest epithets, and told Harris not to submit to arrest. Harris then seized Deputy Home and threw him down, falling on top, when a scuffle for life ensued, during which the officer finally succeeded in getting possession of his pistol which Harris was holding and fired it, the ball striking the negro in the arm and penetrating his head, killing him instantly. Deputy them shot at Laster and Thurman, but they were running away at a 2:40 gait and were out of reach of his bullets. They were soon captures, however, and were carried before Mayor Lovejoy, who fined them $20 each or thirty days on the gang, after which they were tried before Judge Pearce in the city court, who sentenced each to serve twelve months in the gang or pay a fine of $200 and cost. They failed to pay the fine and were sent to the gang. Jim Harris was known as a bad character and owing to the circumstances no blame is attached to deputy Home for his death. As the train was coming down from Macon another negro who was said to be drank fell under the cars at Cochran and both feet cut off, as a result of which he died. J. A. Adams, president of the Early Morning Society, and manager of the excursion, reported that he had been robbed of $65 on the trip down from Macon and two or three negroes were arrested on suspicion as the guilty parties but they were released for lack of proof to convict them.
