H. Rogers, Greeting You are hereby required to act as Captain of a patrol, to ride to such places and at such times as in your Judgement and discretion shall direct provided you do not go over ten miles from your residence (only in cases of emergency), and to your command belong the following men who are hereby enjoyned to obey and respect you as their commander. Dennis Adams } Given under our hands Caswell Adams } Thomas M. Boston, JP Elija Fulgum } Alexander Hodges JP E W Solomons } Ebenezer Folsom } Jesse Harrell } Notes: The document says Lowndes County. Brooks County wasn't formed until 1858. So this document precedes 1858. Second, William Haywood Rogers was born in 1810. His mother moved the family down to Lowndes County around 1828. Two of the subordinate militia men "Dennis Adams" and "Caswell Adams", were born 1821 & 1823 respectively, (fyi: they were his brothers-in-law I believe), so they must have been at least 18 years old meaning that the document was written later than 1841. Since William Haywood Rogers was named "Captain", he must have been old enough and responsible enough to command a small militia unit, but not too old to go off when needed. I estimate he must have been in his early 40's. That would date the document to the early to mid 1850's. Probable date range of 1840-1855.
