Scott and 1st wife Mary Jackson Married first MARTHA M. HILTON 22 April 1846 Bulloch County, Georgia aft 1898 Bryan County, Georgia Daughter of John R. Hilton Andrew married second MARY BIRD Andrew Jackson Scott must have moved to Georgia as a child or as a young man. By 1860 he was in Georgia. A listing of an A. Scott was on the Effingham County, Georgia, census in 1860, living with a C. Morgan family. His parentage is still as of now unknown, but it seems likely that his parents were a Thomas C. Scott (1824-1870) and his first wife Mary Jackson, both originally from North Carolina and migrated to Bulloch and Bryan counties, Georgia. THIS IS AS OF YET UNPROVEN BUT LIKELY. Andrew Scott enlisted in the Confederate Army on 18 May 1861 in Savannah, Georgia, to Company K, 10th Georgia Infantry Regiment. In March 1862 he was transferred to Capt. Fraser's Battery, Georgia Light Artillery, and served for the duration of the war. On his pension application, he said to have surrendered at Appomattox on 9 April 1865. His service records indicate, however, that he was court marshaled (Gen. Orders No. 28) on 27 February 1863. The reason for the court martial is not known. Interestingly, his service records do not record his presence at Appomattox. He lived in Bulloch County, Georgia after the war, and is listed as a resident of that county on every census from 1870 onward. He lived with his wife Martha, and her parents, John R. and Mary Hilton in the 1870 Census, and was since shown as head of household. Mary Hilton was living with them in 1880. They resided in the Sinkhole District of Bulloch County, which is near the Bryan County line. Andrew and Martha had six children before she died about 1898. According to the 1910 and 1920 Censuses, he married Mary (maiden name unknown) in 1899. His occupation listed, as well as his death certificate, was a farmer. He applied for a Confederate pension in 1907. In the application, he said to have lived in Georgia since 1850 (though no census lists him). This being the case, he must have moved here with some family by 1860. The application also gives light to his infirmities. He said to have cataracts that "rendered me unable to work altogether". He had no property, either real or personal, with the exception of "a few household goods". He provided that he also stayed for brief periods in Emanuel and Tattnall counties. That, plus his saying that he "labored on rented farm" for years. Knowing that he had no property, that makes one assume that either he rented his farm and homeplace from someone else or that he was a sharecropper. Two physicians who examined him (Dr. A.J. Mooney and Dr. A. W. Quattenbaum) concluded he had Cataracts(?) in his head and also suffered from rheumatism in his knee. He was thence granted the pension, due to his "very poor" physical condition. He died in Bryan County in 1924 of a cerebral hemorrhage, and was buried in Ash Branch Church Cemetery right near the Bulloch/Bryan line. Much of his progeny is buried there, including sons Thomas, Robert, John, and George, and some of their descendants. CHILDREN OF ANDREW AND MARTHA SCOTT--- 1. George W.
