MAY 1998 Copyright © 1998 INTRODUCTION Land, which comprises the Fort Stewart Military Reservation, was acquired by the federal government in 1940-41 for use as an anti-aircraft training center for the United States Army. The land, totaling more than 279,000 acres, is situated in the southeast Georgia counties of Bryan, Evans, Liberty, Long and Tattnall. There were 27 cemeteries deeded to the government in individual deeds or mentioned in church deeds. Some cemeteries were transferred along with church and other property with no mention of the cemetery. This makes it difficult to determine the exact number, especially the family cemeteries that include a small number of graves, many of them having no permanent markers. The Taylors Creek Cemetery is one of the larger cemeteries not mentioned individually or in he church deed. At one time the Post Engineers at Fort Stewart had cemeteries numbered as high as fifty-nine. At least thirty-nine churches of various denominations were disbanded when the property was acquired by the Federal Government. The Methodist Parsonage and Methodist Campground, both of which were located at Taylors Creek, brought the total number of church properties to forty-one. In the 1960s, an Army Reserve unit, the Cemetery Platoon of Detachment 1, 851st Service Company (Fld) (GS) of Enterprise, Alabama, made a survey of all known cemeteries on Fort Stewart. Various people have made surveys of individual cemeteries, but there has been a great need for a complete and accurate catalog of all the cemeteries. This survey of the Fort Stewart cemeteries has taken a lot longer than intended. Most of the delay has been due to the compiler having insufficient time to devote to the project. Almost all of the headstones in these cemeteries are old and some are very hard to read. A lot of chalk had to be used in order to be able to read them. Every marker was carefully read, recorded, typed and proof read. Even so, there may be some errors in this work. If any are found, the compiler will appreciate them being brought to his attention. Directions shown in this survey are provided for convenience in locating the cemeteries. At the time permission is granted for a visit to a cemetery, Range Control will outline a route based on road conditions and training in the area. (Next page is blank) FORT STEWART CEMETERY COUNCIL ORGANIZED At the direction of MG Paul E. Blackwell, Commanding General of the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) and Fort Stewart, the Fort Stewart Cemetery Council was organized in 1993. The council was formed as a forum for relatives and friends of people interred at both Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. One of the benefits of the council having been formed is the promotion of a better understanding by everyone of the rules and regulations regarding the cemeteries. The Army, subject to available resources, is dedicated to the preservation of the cemeteries on the military reservation. STANDARD PROCEDURE FOR CEMETERY VISITS AND FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS 1.
