Pate, Aug 17, 1881-Oct 20, 1902. ============================= NOTES: The Waters Cemetery is also the resting place of four others. My Father Gordon Ulmer Dixon was told by his grandfather, David Sanford Ulmer, that his, David's, parents were also buried there. The markers are no longer there, but J. Thadeus Ulmer (about 1849-1907) and his wife Josephine "Eliza" Van Brackle (about 1842- 1907) lay there. They died in Savannah in an influenza epidemic. Also there are two children of David Ulmer and Lilly Viola Wise. One was stillborn and the other about two years at the time of death. Their names are not now known. In 2001 we visited that cemetery and my father is certain this is the place. Terri Dixon Garafolo tgarafolo@earthlink.net Note: SHERRILL NAPIER I visited the Waters cemetery at two different times in the 1970's and 1980's with elderly Hayman-Van Brackle decendents who lived in the Bryan Co. area but have long since passed away. We were double kin and visited them often. While we were at the cemetery, I remember asking them why it was named the Waters cemetery, and they said they only knew it as the the Jett Wise Cemetery and did not know when or why it became known as the Waters Cemetery. I assume it was when Fort Stewart was created in the 1940's. I know there were Wises in the family. Their gr. grandfather and my gg grandfather was Wm. Henry Van Brackle who is buried in the Waters Cemetery between two wives: his first wife and their ancestor, Elizabeth Mathis Van Brackle, and his 3rd wife and my ancestor, Sarah Ann Shuman Lightsey Van Brackle. (Someone has incorrectly published her name as Sarah Barbara Shuman but it was Sarah Ann Shuman, named for her mother Sealy/Cealy Ann Futch. The incorrect 2nd name may have been due to the fact that there was a Barbara married to Sarah Ann's brother William Ferdinand Shuman. ) Wm. Henry's son, Israel, is also buried there. There is also a grave of Pearl (cannot find her last name at the moment) who is buried there. They did not seem to know who she was or the relationship to the Van Brackles, and I have not found one either. William Henry Van Brackle and his father, John Van Brackle, both of Bryan Co. John was a Rev. Soldier from Monmouth Co., NJ who got land in Bryan Co. after the Revolutionary War. John's ancestors were in New York in the 1600's when the Dutch settled there. John came to Georgia with his brother, Stephen, right after the Revolutionary War. John's son, Wm. Henry, was Bryan Co. Sheriff and a legislator (as was John earlier) during the War Between the States NOTES: AWChassereau@aol.com Alfred Chassereau To: GABRYAN-L@rootsweb.com Below is information I have compiled on the early VanBrackle family from Bryan County, GA.
