The ancestor of this family was one WILLIAM ILER. William was born in 1800 in Virginia, according to the 1850 census of Bulloch County, Georgia, the earliest one to list ages and birthplaces for those recorded. By 1819 he was in Bulloch County, where he married ELIZABETH JONES. Elizabeth was born on 2 December 1803 in Bulloch County, a daughter of Thomas Jones and Martha Denmark. William and Elizabeth most likely settled in the area where Red Hill Church is located in south Bulloch, for many of the graves at that church were of the Iler and Denmark families. William and Martha had eleven children, all daughters except son Adam Jones Iler. Of the daughters, most of their husbands have enlisted in the Confederate Army at the beginnings of the Civil War. As the turbulence of the nation has come to a head, Georgia seceded along with 10 other southern states to form the Confederacy. Many men from all across the new country have joined to preserve their rights and liberties, and a great many of them died whilst defending their cause, including a few of William Iler’s sons-in-law. Although William’s will hasn’t been placed and looked upon just yet, a date has been extracted from Bulloch County Will files, dating his death between september and October 1864. Elizabeth Jones Iler was last seen in the 1870 census. 1. Martha Iler 26 November 1820 Bulloch County, Georgia married Reubin C. Martin 1805-1847 2.
