He settled in what was then Effingham County (territory cut into Bulloch, 1796.) This is indicated by the reason of the fact that William and John Tomlinson, two known son of the Rev. ancestor, were born in SC in 1781 and 1784 according to the 1850 census (See Lowndes Co., Georgia census 1850) See also Huxford's History of Clinch Co., Georgia pub 1916, pp. 159-162, 303. Further indicated by fact that Moses Tomlinson, a son of said soldier, was born in Georgia in 1790 (according to the 1850 census and in 1793 according to the 1860 census). It is also indicated by the fact that Effingham county, GA estate records show that john Tomlinson was adm in that county in 1791 on the estate of his father, William Tomlinson, deceased and recepted July 4, 1793, for his part of the estate. Estate records of Bulloch Co., GA show John Tomlinson aforesaid died in that county and that his widow, Rebecca L. Tomlinson applied for administration Feb. 9, 1801 and was appointed July 20, 1801; his estate was appraised Aug. 1, 1801 and she applied to be dismissed having wound up with the estate, March 8, 1802. The said widow, Rebecca L.(who is referred to in aforesaid History of Clinch County, GA as Lucretia by which name she was commonly called) moved with her sons, William, John and Moses Tomlinson to what was Lowndes County, Georgia in 1822 (see p. 20 aforesaid History of Clinch Co. GA). While residing in Lowndes county she drew land in Georgia Land Lottery (1838 Lottery) as the widow of a Rev. Soldier (See Cherokee Land Lottery of Georgia, published in book form).
