Company E 5th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Bulloch & Emanuel Counties, Georgia "Bulloch Troops" OFFICERS AND STAFF Captain George B. BEST Captain W. N. HALL 1st Lieutenant Thomas J. EDWARDS 1st Lieutenant William Perry ROUNTREE enlisted as a Private in Company C (Bulloch Troops), 2nd Battalion Georgia Cavalry, on 2 November 1861. Private Rountree was appointed to the rank of 2nd Sergeant on 22 March 1862 and to 1st Sergeant on 9 May 1862. 1st Sergeant Rountree transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 January 1863, and was elected 3rd Lieutenant, Jr. His records show him as 2nd Lieutenant, Jr. in March 1863. In 1864 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. He was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865.[FAM REC -FAULK - MIL REC- PEN REC] EXPANDED SKETCH 2nd Lieutenant William Michael HENDERSON enlisted as a Private in Company C (Bulloch Troop), 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion, in late 1861. He transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, on 20 Jan 1863, and was appointed 2nd Sergeant. Records show he served as acting Regimental Color-bearer. During the time he was serving as acting Color-bearer 2nd Sergeant Henderson was appointed 2nd Lieutenant for "Brilliant and conspicuous bravery on the field of battle." During the Battle of Waynesboro, Georgia, Sergeant Henderson dismounted the Adjutant of the 9th Michigan Cavalry with the staff of the Regimental flag, and captured him. William Michael Henderson was call "Captain" by his friends and family after the war. "Captain" Henderson was born in 1843, and died in 1932. WILLIAMS 2nd Sergeant Gideon Hayes BROWN, son of Jesse BROWN and Mary DECKLE, was born 16 Apr 1834. Sixteen year old Gideon is found in his father's household in the 1850 Emanuel County Census. He enlisted as a private in Company C, 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion, on 2 Nov 1861. Company C was also known as the “Bulloch troop” or Captain Best’s Company. On 20 Jan 20, 1863, he transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, as a 4th Sergeant. By July 1863 he had been promoted to 3rd Sergeant, the rank he held until June 1864, when he was listed as 2nd Sergeant. He participated in all the major battles of the 5th Georgia Regiment. In his own words he stated: “ Our Regiment did coast duty until the summer of 1864 when we went to Johnston’s Army at Kennesaw Mountain, Saltville, Virginia, Noonday Church, Newnan, Philpots Ferry, Bear Creek station, Waynesboro, and you might say a continued skirmish from the time we left Atlanta to the Surrender.” His name appeared on a muster roll as “present” on 28 Apr 1865. 2nd Sergeant BROWN was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 3 May 1865. He married Matilda "Tilda" Coleman in Emanuel County, on 4 May 1868. Gideon died 28 Feb 1905, at Canoochee, Georgia. He and his wife are buried at Hawhammock Baptist Church Cemetery in Emanuel County, Georgia. STEWART Sergeant F. Marion MILLER Sergeant J. B. BRENSON Sergeant E. M. KENNEDY Sergeant James Emmett COLEMAN, son of Rev. Elisha Coleman and Mary Lucretia Scott Nasworthy, was born 18 Apr 1838 in Emanuel County, Georgia. He enlisted, as a private, in Company C, "BULLOCH TROOPS", 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 2 Nov 1861, in Savannah, Georgia. James Emmett transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry, 20 Jan 1863. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal, Jan 1863, 1st Corporal in Dec 1864, and later to Sergeant (other records only show him as 1st Corporal). He was paroled on 26 Apr 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. James Emmett Coleman died 3 Oct 1912, and is buried in the Brinson Family Cemetery near Canoochee, Emanuel County, Georgia. He married Sarah Missouri BRINSON 22 Oct 1865 in Emanuel County, Georgia, daughter of Benjamin BRINSON and Mary LEWIS. She was born 22 Oct 1845 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died 30 Sep 1923. Sarah Missouri Brinson served as Postmistress at the Canoochee, Georgia Post Office for both the Confederate and U.S. Governments. BARWICK, 22 Feb 1855 in Emanuel County Georgia, daughter of Lott BARWICK and Elizabeth ROUNTREE. Augustus and Nancy are buried at Bethel Church Cemetery near Twin City, Emanuel County, Georgia. Joseph Warren was sheriff of Emanuel County from 1873 – 1875. He was Emanuel County Treasurer from 1900 – 1902. They had nine children. He was an Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church, and was the first pastor of the Summit Baptist Church in Summit, Georgia. He married MARTHA FRANCES NEWTON 07 Mar 1867 in Emanuel County, Georgia. He enlisted in the Bulloch Troop on 9 May 1862 in Savannah, Georgia. On 20 jan 1863, he transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Carlton was paroled at Hillsboro, North Carolina on 3 May 1865. Charlton Gay received the Southern Cross of Honor in 1914 from the Bulloch County Chapter #1498. He is buried in Eastside Cemetery outside of Statesboro, Georgia. He enlisted in the Bulloch Troop on 24 Oct 1861 in Savannah, Georgia. On 20 Jan 1863 he transferred to Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry. He was paroled on 3 May 1865, at Hillsboro, North Carolina. He married SELETA ANN CHURCHILL LANIER Abt. 1864, daughter of THOMAS LANIER and FRANCES NEWTON. She was born 29 Sep 1844 in Bulloch County, Georgia, and died 24 Sep 1927 in Bryan County, Georgia. He and Seleta Ann had ten children. He is buried in Beulah Church Cemetery, Pembroke, Bryan County, Georgia. [FAM NANCY GAY CRAWFORD - MIL REC] Matthew Marin GAY, son of Absolum Gay and Mary Ann Wiggins, enlisted in Company E, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 1 Aug 1863 at Macon, Georgia. He was reported as AWOL since 1 Sep 1864 and was listed on the roll of prisoners of war, belonging to the Confederate Army. He was paroled at Augusta, Georgia on 24 May 1865. He was born May 1838 in Emanuel County, Georgia, and died 21 Mar 1890 in Emanuel County, Georgia. He married SUSANNAH JOHNSON 15 Dec 1859 in Emanuel County, Georgia, daughter of JAROT JOHNSON and CHARLOTTE. He and Susannah had eight children. He is buried at Elam Baptist Church Cemetery.
