LOLLIE COBB OF STATESBORO, GEORGIA Death of a Former Robesonian. Dear Robesonian: - Our hearts are all bowned with sorrow to-day for we have just placed in her grave the body of out dear sister, Mrs. Lollie Cobb, the devoted wife of Rev. T. J. Cobb, formerly of Robeson county, North Carolina. Yesterday at 2 o’clock, p. m. a stroke of lightning struck the residence of brother Cobb with such terrific force that the whole south end of the building was wrecked and Mrs. Cobb, who was in the front room assorting her laundry, was instantly killed. How any member of the family escaped is a mystery. To view the residence and know the position occupied by the others, it seems impossible! Brother Cobb had just finished preparing a sermon for the next day and passing his wife, kissed her and went in an adjoining room and lay across the bed. His little boy was in the same room near a mirror, dressing. Clara, his eldest, was standing near her mother and the baby girl, Annie, was in the hall. When the shock came, learning out the end of the room in which he was and shattering the mirror, brother Cobb took up the little boy and ran out in the hall to the crying baby when Clara came out of the room screaming, “oh papa, is mamma dead,” when the poor fellow rushed to the room to find the devoted wife and mother already dead. Neighbors soon came through the ruins, offering sympathy, help, money! I never saw more kindness not generosity displayed. But no wonder. No man stands higher in Bulloch county than Mr. Cobb. He has the confidence of all the people and is deservedly popular. And his wife was a well beloved! Hers was a beautiful character, unadorned simplicity, kindness of manner, modest, courteous, cheerful. She was a noble wife and appreciated the high calling of her husband. When he started to his work and remarked about an early return her cheerful reply, was, “don’t come back on my accounty; you do your work and I will get along somehow,” God bless the memory of such unselfish sacrifice for His cause. Her sprightly, cheerful service made her home a very happy one and well may her husband mourn her sudden taking away. And what a funeral scene when we carried her to the church and thence to the cemetery. Seldom has such a funeral been witnessed in our town. Lawyers, doctors, merchants, farmer, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian and Primitives, all came to mourn with the mourner and weep for the dead. As the pastor conducted the funeral, assisted by the Methodist and Presbyterian pastors, there was scarely a dry eye in the overflowing congregation. Mrs. Cobb was the daughter of Mr. S. P. Klarpp, of Robeson county, and well may we thank North Carolina and Robeson county for the gift of such noble children. We extend our sympathy to the many sorrowing relatives and friends in North Carolina and pray God to comfort the hearts of husband and children. Jno. F. McMillan. Statesboro, Ga., Sept. 1, 1900.
