Burke County Georgia Bio Nathaniel Miller File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by bonedigr@concentric.net Charles Miller Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/burke.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm NATHANIEL MILLER Nathaniel MILLER was the son of Robert and Mary (Alexander) MILLER of the Tyger River area of Spartanburg, SC. That area was formerly Anson Co and Mecklenburg Co, NC so when Robert MILLER died Jan. 1765 his will (I have the will) was recorded in Mecklenburg because there was no Spartanburg until 1779 or so. Robert MILLER arrived from MD to Anson Co NC 1753 on an 800 acre grant from Gov. Rice NC. Nathaniel was his son and was heir to the main property, a part of the 800 acres where Robert and Mary lived. Nathaniel MILLER b. 1738 Ireland was a Revolutionary War veteran as is recorded in the GA State Archives. He first married Elizabeth Colson, sister of William Colson, apparently they came together from NC to St. George's Parish of GA. The following prenuptial agreement will testify to their marriage. Marriage settlement with trust agreement, September 6, 1759; Nathaniel Millar and Elizabeth Colson. in view of their intended marriage, place in trust with Thomas Barrington and William Colson 10 Negro slaves, five of whom belong to Nathaniel Millar, namely, Norwich a man, Jack a man, Sue a woman and her child a boy named Charles, and Dinah a woman; and five of whom belong to Elizabeth Colson, namely, Scipio a man, Lucy a woman and her child a boy named Tom, Judy a woman, and a boy named Wall. Immediately after the marriage Nathaniel Miller is to have use of the slaves and their increase for the rest of his life. If his wife should survive him, she is to have the use of the slaves for the rest of her life. Any child whom they may have will, after the decease of both parents, inherit the slaves and will come into possession of them on reaching the age of 21 or at the time of marriage. If they have more than one child, each child will receive his or her proportionate share of the slaves. Income from the slaves is to be used to maintain and educate the children as minors. If there are no children living at the time of the death of the survivor of Nathaniel Millar and Elizabeth Colson, the slaves shall be disposed of according to the last will and testament of the survivor. If a will is lacking, the slaves originally belonging to Nathaniel shall go to his next of kin and those belonging to Elizabeth (notwithstanding her coverture) shall go to her next of kin. The trustees at this time pay 10 shillings each to Millar and Elizabeth Colson, and the trustees are to be paid any expenses incurred in executing the trust. A receipt of five shillings from each of the trustees is recorded. WITNESSED BY: Robert Bevill. planter, and Sarah Bevill, both of Hallifax Edward Barnard, Esquire, J. P.
