Notes: Wm. O. Milton’s parents died when he was quite young. On their death he went to live with his uncle and aunt William and Susan Utley. On the death of William Utley in 1854, William Oliver went to live with his aunt and uncle Henry and Cornelia Utley. William and Henry Utley were half-brothers. Cornelia Utley was the sister of William Oliver’s mother Lodasky Hill Milton. Though the aunts and uncles took this young man in, he was legally the ward of Isaac Heath, a wealthy uncle married to his Aunt Nancy Milton Heath. It should be noted that Wm. O. Milton served as a musician in Captain Cox Cobb’s Legion Band and Phillip’s Legion Brass Band. He served at the Battle of Gettysburg and was a witness to General Lee’s surrender at Appomatox Courthouse. William O. Milton wrote many letters to his Uncle Isaac Heath from the field of battle during the Civil War. These letters, now in possession of William H. Phillips, a great grandson, tell us of the events surrounding William’s daily life during this period. Many Burke County residents and family relations are mentioned in William’s writing.
