The petition of William G. W. Lane a minor under the age of Twenty one years who sues by James Torrance Esq., his guardian respectfully sheweth that Insel Spence of the county & state aforesaid hath injured and damaged your petitioner seventeen hundred dollars. For that whereas the said William G. W. Lane heretofore to wit, on the thirty first day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two was lawfully possessed as of his own property of a male negro slave named Sharlow of great value to wit of the value of seven hundred dollars. And being so possessed there of he the said William G. W. Lane afterwards to wit on the day and year aforesaid at Scriven County aforesaid casually lost the said male negro Sharlow out of his possession, and the said Sharlow afterwards, to wit on the day & year last aforesaid at Scriven County aforesaid into the possession of the said Insel Spence by finding came. Yet the said Insel Spence wellknowing the said male negro slave to be the property of the said William G. W. Lane & of right to belong and appertain to him, but contriving of frudulently intending crafty to defraud the said William in this behalf hath not as yet delivered the said male negro slave Sharlow to the said William G. W. Lane nor to the said James Torrance as guardian as aforesaid although often requested so to do & (hitherto?) hath refused so to do & afterwards on the day & year last aforesaid at Scriven County aforesaid converted and disposed of the said male negro slave Sharlow to his own use to the damage of your petitioner the sum of one thousand dollars & therefore he brings this suit. Wherefore your petitioner prays process may issue requiring the said Insel Spence personally or by his attorney to be and appear at the next Inferior Court to be holdin and for said county of Scriven on the second monday in July next to answer your petitioner in an action of (Trover Fe?) & the said James brings into court his letters of Guardianship. The defendant is herby required personally or by attorney to be and appear at an Inferior Court to be holden in & for the county of Scriven on the second monday of July next then and there to answer the plaintiff in an action of (Trovers?)
