Robert E Reid(?), Judge Georgia, Burke Co. In the Superior Court, November Term, 1818 We, the Grand Jury for the county of Burke, do present Joseph Thomas, for keeping open doors on Sabbath days, and trading with negroes. Witnesses Thomas Hatcher, David Martin, and Henry McNorrill. We also present William Royal and Maryanne Sumner, for living in adultory.(sic) Witnesses John Wimberly and Seaborn Royal. We also present Moses Mulkey & Charlotte Godfrey for living in adultry.(sic) Witnesses Alford Godbee, Isaac Mulkey, Jesse Grigory. We also present Moses Wright and Elizabeth Horsford for living in adultery (sic). Witnesses Jacob Clemonts, Maryan Clemonts. We also present Mary Cammell as a common scold and a disturber of the peaceful inhabitants of the county. Witnesses George Gough, William Palmar, Amos Wiggins, Samuel Tarver, Math Carswell, James Todd. We also prsent as aggrievance, the unprecedented number of pedlars hawking about goods in our county, and the state generally, to the great injury of our settled merchants and citizens at large, for the following reasons, ( to wit)-- They funish very few really useful or sustantial articles to the Planter; but goods of the slightest texture or fabrick (sic), and those frequently damaged. They carry a great amount of cash out of our state anually, which if left with our citizens would return to circuation again. Secondly, they do not pay as much tax as a regular settled merchant, by fifty to one hundred per cent; besides they cannot be compelled to bear other burthens as imposed by the state, which our citizens are subject to; such as extra taxes for county purposes, doing militia duty, working on roads, &c. We can but express the solicitude we feel in relation to the salaries of our public officers, and especially as regards the salaries of the Judges of the Superior Courts. When we take into view the situation of this country, and the prices of produce, and the expenses of living at the time the salaries of public officers were fixed and established, with the state of things at this time; and when we take into view the additional duty that have devolved on the judicial department, we can but express a desire to see their salaries increased. We therefore request the Senator and Representatives of this county, to use their exertions on the Legislature now in session, if compatible with their opinions, to have this desirable object accomplished. We feel it is a duty incumbent on us to express our thanks to his honor Judge Reid, for his promptitude in suppressing all disorderly and immoral conduct taking place under the eye of the court, and for his dilligence and assiduity in discharging the functions of his office. We further recommend that the Clerk be directed to have these presentments published; and also be directed to furnish each of the members elected from this county to the legislature now in session, with a copy of the presentment relating to Pedlars, and the recommendation for the increase of the Judges salaries.
