J.J. GRESHAM: Mr. J. Jones Gresham, a member of one of Burke county's oldest and most honored families passed away quietly at his home on Myrick street in this city Monday morning. Mr. Gresham was a native of Burke County and at the time of his death had reached the age of 65. When quite a young man he enlisted in the Confederate army to fight for his beloved Southland. He served in Wheeler's division, 5th Georgia Cavalry in Capt. Marsh's company. The memories of the Confederacy and its many hard fought battlefields were ever dear to him and he loved to mingle with his comrades and recount the glorious victories of the boys in gray. He love to attend the reunions and other gatherings of Confederate Veterans and tho his feeble condition often times would not warrant his attendance, still with the persistent pluck and undaunted courage which characterized him as one of the South's bravest soldiers he was always present and took an active part in making these occasions delightful for all. After the war Mr. Gresham returned to his native county to take up the important duties of citizenship and give his every effort to rehabilitating the old South. By his thrift intelligence and upright conduct, he early established himself as one of Burke's most representative citizens. Mr. Gresham was a man of remarkable memory and a most gifted conversationalist. It was a rare treat to hear him recount his many recollections of the war times. The funeral occurred at the residence 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and was attended by many friends and relatives and Gordon Camp of veterans of the 60's. The interment was at Magnolia cemetery and he was placed to rest in the bosom of his native land covered with Dixie's choicest flowers. Mr. Gresham is survived by his wife Ella Lassiter Gresham,and four children. Mrs. Mamie Milledge, Mrs. Seaborn Jones and Messrs. Orrin and Arthur Gresham.
