Burke County Georgia Sarah Utley Milton Obit File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Don Langford" Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/burke.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm The Obituary of Mrs. Sarah Utley Milton From The Lake City Reporter, Lake City, Florida, August 1895 Milton - Sarah Utley was born in Burke County, Ga., Feb. 14, 1830. She was married to David Milton November 30, 1849, baptized in 1850, and died at the home of her son Jos. E. Milton, near Live Oak, Florida, Aug. 20, 1895. She was my neighbor and I know that her life at its very core was true and good and strong, such a life as the world needs to know. Her experience was not checkered in the sense of vibrating between the heights of depths of temporal change. She was always poor and she furnished proof of the grand fact that poverty is the soil in which to grow character. I am sure she knew two things, the depths of sorrow, and the peace that passes understanding. Her husband was a Baptist preacher of the old school, who told the gospel story for the love of Christ at the way- side school house to the pastor-less church, wherever he found anxious listeners, without money and without price. Before he reached middle life he died, leaving her with a large famly of young children to support and train. She was a loving mother, but not indulgent; a tireless worker, and yet a woman who could rest. She was a faithful but a fearless friend. She was just, but not hard, an untrained woman in a sense, and yet conversant with most topics. She was prudent, but very hopeful. Love was the rule of her home and I never knew a more loving family than hers grew up to be. She felt for some time before her death that her stay on earth was short. She did not wish it otherwise. Her death bed was a true picture of the triumph of a spirit over bodily pain; and those who saw her meet and clasp again her dear dead, felt that heaven is very near. Her children laid her to sleep by her husband’s side in a country church yard and I feel sure her meek, tried hands will bear palms of victory in the resurrection of the just.
