James H. The newly elected Alderman from the Fourth Ward, was born October 13, 1865, three-quarters of a mile from where he now does business, as manager of the largest commercial business in this section – born at the old Carmichael homestead, where W. A. Newton now resides. He remained on the farm until he became twenty years of age, getting only a common school education. In the fall of 1885, he came to Jackson, and commenced his business life clerking for the firm of Dempsey & Manley. He continued with that firm for over one year, and then went with the firm of Smith & Etheridge. After working for about two and one-half years, he went into business with Mr. J. H. McCallum and Mr. S. O. Ham in the store rooms where Mr. J. J. Thornton now does business under the firm name of McCallum-Carmichael Co. After the expiration of something over one year, the style of the firm was changed to J. H. Carmichael & co. After continuing under this firm name for about one and he-half years he then organized the present firm, The Carmichael Co., in the fall of 1891. The firm then moved into the buildings now occupied by the Jackson Mercantile Co., and after remaining there for more than a year, they bought out the mercantile firm of Smith-Etheridge Co., and moved into the handsome building they now occupy. The present firm (Carmichael Co.) is eleven years of age of which Mr. J. H. Carmichael is President and General Manager, and has been from its beginning ably assisted by Mr. E. Lee Smith as Secretary and Treasurer. And has associated with him in that business men who have been with him since he first started. Mr. Carmichael is now 36 years of age. His father was R. Carter Carmichael, who died when he was 15 years of age, and James H. had entire control of the farm until he came to Jackson at 20 years of age. Carter Carmichael was the son of John A Carmichael, one of the pioneers of this section, who located near the Griffin road, in this county, near Towaliga River. Mr. Carmichael’s mother was the daughter of Judge J. W. Harkness, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Jackson. Mr. Carmichael married the daughter of Col. J. H. McCallum, and has a bright and interesting family. J. H. Carmichael has several times served Jackson as alderman, and several times as member of the school board. That he carried into the conduct of the city’s affairs the same clear business ability that has marked his rapid and substantial climb upwards, is evidenced by the primary, and defeated a man who had never been beaten. It is fortunate that the city now has him in her services again. It was largely to his vim and acumen that the great success of the Jackson Chautauqua was due. What can The Argus say of Jim Carmichael to the people of this section? Do not we all know and love him ? Hasn’t the confidence, the respect and the admiration of every man, woman and child in all Middle Georgia ? Is there a man who ever knew him who could say a word against him ? Ten thousand times, no! What grander eulogy can pen paint of any man that simple, truthful declaration ? Jackson Argus – Week of January 3, 1902 Additional Comments: Georgia Deaths, 1919-98 Name:James H.
