Laid by Negros in Jail to Murder Jailer

A diabolical plot has just been unearthed in which one of Jackson’s popular 
citizens came near loosing his life at the hands of five fiendish Negroes 
incarcerated in the jail.  Had not one of the participants in the plot weakened 
at the eleventh hour and gave the plans away, Mr. Mat Holifield would have been 
foully murdered.  Mr. Holifield was acting in the capacity of jailer in the 
absence of sheriff Crawford, and plans were made to kill him when he entered 
the cell to feed the prisoners by a negro who is considered a desperate 
character in the county, and he was joined in by the other negroes in the 
jail.  They had torn up a chair and determined to carry one out their plans at 
any cost.  One of the conspirator’s heart flickered at the last moment and he 
informed Mr. Holifield of his impending danger, and thus saved his life and 
Butts county a lynching.  They had planned to brain and kill the acting jailer 
as he entered the cell, and escape.  A close watch is now kept upon the 
incarcerated prisoners, who had planned to commit a horrible murder in order to 
carryout their plan.
