Alonzo Reed kills Caroline Benton
Out beyond McCord’s Mill, Tuesday evening, Alonzo Reed a little 9 year old 
negro, accidentally shot and killed Caroline Benton, a 7 year old negress.  The 
parents of the children were neighbors, and the children were regular playmates.   
The little fellow was scared to death over what he had done, and hid the body of 
the little negress.  Search was made for here that night and Wednesday about 
noon, the body was found in a clump of woods back of the house.  The little boy, 
and all the grown members of the family, were arrested, and a coroner’s inquest 
was held Thursday morning.  After hearing all the testimony in the case and the 
little negro’s confession, the jury rendered a verdict of death from the 
accidental discharge of a pistol in the hands of the boy, and the boy and all 
the others were turned loose.  If there are any developments in the case, the 
grand jury will investigate the matter.  The chief crime seems the boy’s effort 
to conceal the body and hid the truth from his mother, after taking his father’s 
pistol to play with.
