Jackson Argus – Butts County August 7, 1898
Gus Goodman shot General Connally last Saturday and on Sunday morning the 
wounded man died.

Both parties were negroes.  The killing was done at the store on Covington 
street known as railroad crossing.  It appears that Connally was shot in the 
bowels with a 38 calibre pistol and died as above stated.

Goodman was arrested and is now in jail awaiting trial.  He will be represented 
by Dr. Mays.
