He was arrested for carrying concealed weapons and while at the Mayor’s office made an escape and ran swiftly away into the eastern part of the city hotly pursued by officers. The fugitive was lost near the residence of Mr. J. R. Sams and the race abandoned. Quite a time after the chase was given up something was said about the man having been seen near Mr. Sams’ residence. Mrs. Sams was uncomfortable over this information and in order to assure herself that no one was concealed on her premises she began a search of the various apartments. In one of the rooms she stooped looked under a bed and saw an object that looked very suspicious and an closer inspection found it to be a man. Mrs. Sams is a woman of rare presence of mind in emergencies but Mr. Sams says her exclamation was loud enough to be distinctly heard by this man under the bed, at least. He crawled out and thinking the officers were waiting around the house tried to reassure Mrs. Sams and asked her not to be frightened as he was only hiding from he officers. But Mrs. Sams was indignant and ordered the man to leave the premises, which he did at a 2:40 gait. In attempting to pass the depot he ran into the arms of Policeman McMichael, who landed him safely behind the bars after a thrilling escapade Week of January 7, 1898 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/butts/newspapers/athrilli1900gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
