H. Land’s houses, raised an alarm Sunday night and some Negroes hearing his cries, ran to the rescue and frightened off two other Negroes, who were about to kill the old man, for the sake of two or three dollars he had on his person. The robbers succeeded in cutting “Bear” a few fearful slashes on the back of the neck, and while the wounds are not considered serious, they are very painful.
