Jackson Argus – Butts County September 19, 1897
At the Pepperton factory on Wednesday of last week there was an attempt on the 
part of Burl Dorton, a young white man, to commit rape on a little daughter of 
Billie Duke.   The little girl is nearly twelve years old while Dorton is about 
19 years of age.

It seems that the little Duke girl was spending the night at the house occupied 
by the Dorton’s and after she had gone to sleep she was awakened by young 
Dorton.  The little girl screamed and Dorton slunk out.  He came back the 
second time and tried again his attack but the cries of the little girl again 
ran him away.

The little girl reported the matter to her parents and a warrant was sworn out 
for Dorton’s arrest.  He was arrested by Sheriff Beauchamp and the preliminary 
hearing is set of Tuesday next at 8 o’clock.  Judge Bailey has been retained by 
the defense while the state will be looked after Col. Hall.

Dorton asked the sheriff what he thought the sentence would be and the officer 
told him that it was discretionary with the judge – from one to twenty years.
