Senator Atkinson Assailant Behind the Bars

Last Wednesday night bout 12 o’clock Sheriff Beauchamp went out to a negro 
frolic on Steve Davis’ place to look for General Carson, the Negro who made a 
murderous assault on State Senator Atkinson a few weeks ago.

Carson was indicted by the grand jury a few weeks since and has been playing 
shy of the officers.  But Sheriff Beauchamp learned that his man was in that 
neighborhood and knowing the negroe’s fondness for “swinging partners” he went 
out to see what he could see.  The sheriff went by after Steve Davis and 
together ass they went to the party. Festivities were at high pitch, and Steve 
went in and told the crowd that he had come to see them dance a while.  
Directly he went out and Mr. Beauchamp told him to go in again and station 
himself at the other door, there were only two doors to use.  This done without 
attracting any attention the sheriff stepped in.  As General came by with 
his “gal” the sheriff caught him by the arm and asked.

Who is this?

General Carson.

All right, I want you, General.

All right boss, said the Negro.

He was brought to town and put in jail.
