At the hour of two o’clock the conductor put him off the train and left him in Flovilla. He looked about and saw the lurid glare of the flames as they swept through the roof of the store room of Mr. G. B. Elder’s residence. He rushes to the rescue of the sleepers and could only arouse them by smashing against the doors. The fire having originated from the stove, that room was very nearly destroyed when discovered. The sleeping occupants were aroused in time to come out blinded with smoke, suffocating with heat and almost wild with excitement. By this time citizens of the town began top our in and the fight with the flames began, and such a fight as only Flovilla people know how to make. This magnificent two story building wrapped in flames sending burning shingles and cinders to the room of building blocks away. A line of businesses houses in which the Headright is published stand less than 100 feet form the fire, on the one side about the same distance the two story residence of Mrs. P. P. Kelly and across the street the home of J. W. Terrell. To fight for and save all these building was the work of the citizens of Flovilla and nobly did they succeed. Our type and a large portion of the press were placed at a safe distance in the street before it was decided that the men on the roof and outside could save the smoking building. More than one of the flames caught the Kelly building, but work – noble work – saved it. Among those who should stand foremost on the roll of honor are told that in addition to the young man put off the train, our young friend Thomas Mayo stand out preeminently(sp) the hero of the occasion. Many touching incidents could be cited, showing how we are all united in the bonds of sympathy amid such distressing scenes. Our assistant teacher, Miss Marie Marshall, one of the boarders, came very near perishing in the flames, and the (_?_) of our people go out in sympathy to her, as she lost very near everything else she had with her. Amid all this noise and excitement ye local editor could only regret that we could not do our part with the sterner sex in their battle with the flames. We hear that Mr. elder had some insurance but not enough to cover the loss.
