Argus – Week of September 16, 1892 On Monday morning Mrs. Mollie Furson was arranged before Judge Bailey on the charge of cheating and swindling It will be remembered that about the first of last May this woman came to Jackson, representing a new dress cutting patent of her own get up. She offered both the patterns for cutting and tock in her company for sale. She had a splendid tact for business, and quickly succeeded in finding purchasers. She also wished to employ some skilled dressmakers to go to Atlanta and run an extensive dressmaking establishment there. In this she employed Mrs. Paul, but would not do so until Mrs. Paul agreed to invest three hundred dollars in purchasing stock in the Fuson Company. Almost immediately after Mrs. Paul had paid her the money, it began to be rumored that the company was a myth and the stock no good. Mrs. Paul then asked her to return her money, but she refused to do it. Mrs. Paul then instituted suit to recover her money, claiming that the whole thing was a swindle. Mrs. Fuson was arrested and kept in the custody of Deputy Sheriff J. M. Crawford, at his home, until the trial. She was represented by Col. M. V. McKibben and Col. J. W. Preston, of Macon, while the state was represented by Wright & Beck and Col. Anderson. The case was hotly contested on both sides, and it took about all day to hear the testimony, and the speaking continued till near midnight, when the jury went to their room, where they remained but a short time and returned a verdict of not guilty. Much has been said and written to the discouragement of Mrs. Fuson, while she has letters of recommendation from some prominent men in Tennessee. But the jury says she is not guilty. The case brought by the Morrison House for board was also decided in her favor. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.3 Kb
