Argus – Week of November 16, 1893 Mr. English is an old man who lives near Scandrick’s mill just over the Butts line in Monroe County. He is a widower and lives along. On Monday he sold some cotton in Griffin and returned home after dark and went to bed. About 9 o’clock he was aroused by some one calling and saying that his mules had gotten out. He went out and at the corner of the house met a man with a gun pointing to him (English) but quickly as thought the old man grabbed the muzzle of the gun with his left hand and it fired, tearing away the flesh between the wrist and the little finger. He held the gun and the assassin flew. Engraved on the gun was the initials O.F.W. The gun belonged to a young man in this county named Williams and he has skipped to parts unknown and the officers of the law are after him. It was a dastardly attempt to rob an old man and if caught young Williams will fair badly. Mr. English had no money but the robbers expected to get the proceeds of four bales of cotton but the bravery of an old man seventy seven years old thwarted their plans. He shot at the flying devils with their own gun but missed him and they escaped in the darkness.
