Argus – week of May 31, 1894 Mr. D. M. Bell, who lives near Elgin in this county, and who is 75 years old, thought he heard a noise in his barn last Tuesday night about 3 o’clock. He took his gun and went on an investigating tour. One Lewis Barkley, colored, had secured about 100 pounds of fodder, and when he heard Mr. Bell approaching he ran. Mr. Bell asked the gentleman to stop which he refused to do, until Mr. Bell persuaded him to stoop suddenly by putting a load of shot in his thigh.
