McWatkins & Son’s last Saturday night week, and was discovered by Mr. Tobe Ham, a clerk, who had closed the store and stepped out in town and on his returned discovered the money drawer open, and knowing that he left if closed, suspicioned that something was wrong and took a lamp that was left lighted, went behind the counter and seeing an old pair of shoes on the floor, looked under the counter and found the thief. He collared the colored gent and led him out for the purpose of delivering him to the marshal and when they reached the sidewalk the Negro made a successful effort and escaped after having a tussle with Mr. Ham and biting his hand. The darky slid out of his coat, leaving it with Mr. Ham who held him by the coat collar, and struck the grit at a lively pace. Some small change was found in the darkie’s coat pocket, and on the floor. It is not known whether he carried off any or not. We did not learn the darkies name, but a clue to his identify, is sufficient to warrant the proper papers being issued for his arrest. Mr. Ham, though “nigger thief bit” the wound is not however serious.
