Two men Shot – One Dies

We learn from Captain Loyd of a serious difficulty that happened in Covington on
the 19th instant, which resulted in the killing of John McCurdy of Newton
Factory, by Randolph Pearson, of Jasper county.

Noah Parker and Anderson Warran of Newton Factory, had a difficulty some time
ago in which Parker was whipped, whereupon he threatened Warran’s life.  On the
15th instant Parker loaded his gun and went to the field where Warran was at
work, and was waiting for him to hoe out to the end of the roe; but Warran was
on the lookout for Parker and worked altogether in the center of the field.  
Parker finally hollowed to him to look out, and as he did so shot him in the
breast, slightly wounding him.   Warran made for his gun, which he had carried
to the field with him, and Parker made for the woods.  Parker was  arrested and
carried to Covington on Friday last when he had his commitment trial and was
released on a bond of $400 to appear at the Superior court.  Instead of
returning home, Parker and McCurdy got on a big drunk and rocked the wagon yard,
in which some Jasper county wagoners were camping.   After casting several brick
bats into Pearson’s wagon, and while McCurdy was in the attitude of picking up
more stones he was shot in the hip by Pearson, from which he died on Sunday
night last.  Mr. Pearson after having a trial was released.  Parker is in jail,
McCurdy, who was about 18 years of age was of a bad character.
