At a late hour Sunday night two of the young denizens were returning from a visit to a point about a mile from town. It was necessary for them to pass a cemetery which lay very close to the roadside, and it was at this juncture that their blood almost ceased to flow. It was just opposite the city of the dead that the animal which they were driving stopped and began to tremble. Several attempts were made to get the nag to move on, but coaxing and whip were not sufficient to accomplish the desired purpose. About this time the occupants of the vehicle observed a white “something” in the middle of the road, and of course they felt very uncomfortable. Bu one of the lads grew quite brave and leaping from the buggy, gathered a stick and started toward the object. When a few feet nearer the ghostly sight, his courage failed him and he halted. After a few words with his comrade he started again, and again halted. In this third move he got near enough to the object to strike, and after preparing himself to take a speedy departure if necessary, he dealt a paper covered pine brush a tremendous blow.
