The Negro had been a porter for the Chambers House and had stolen two pairs of pants from G. M. Stevens, who boarded there, and a quantity of silverware from the hotel. After locating him this officer went over to Jackson, only to find that he had just drawn his money and quit work. He was almost in despair until he caught on to a slender clue and followed it up with the result that he arrested him about two and a half miles from Jackson in the woods playing “skin,” a Negro game of cards, with fifteen companions. He was to have been tried yesterday afternoon, but it was postponed on account of the absence of Judge Hammond.
