September 1 – (Special) Hon. Joe B. Wall, mayor of Jackson, the indictment of whom was mentioned in these columns last Monday, is now resting under a warrant charging him with assault with intent to murder. The one on whom the assault was made is S. E. Andrews the editor of the Jacksonian. Mr. Wall was indicted by the grand jury of Butts county last week for carrying concealed weapons, mention of which was made in the Jacksonian this week. While Mr. Andrews was walking along the streets today Mr. Wall, it is alleged, came up behind the editor and struck him with a pitch fork handle. The friends of Mr. Andrews swore out a warrant against Wall for assault with intent to murder and the justice placed the bond at one thousand dollars. It is presumed that Wall resented the mention by the Jacksonian of his being indicted. – Atlanta Constitution While The Constitution correspondent was charitable enough to use the term “walked,” people who saw it say he “slipped” up behind the editor. The Jacksonian will duly comment on the above dark deed next week.
