Jackson Argus – Butts County, Week Of August 12, 1898 August 12, 1898
Judge Harkness presented his grandson, Mr. J. H. Carmichael with a beautiful 
gold headed cane this week that has been very much admired by all who have seen 
it.

It was a present to Judge Harkness when he was a member of the Legislature from 
this county thirty eight years ago.  It has a history, therefore, which places 
it out of the ordinary.  It is a rattan with solid gold head, and in order that 
it might be preserved as a family heirloom it was turned over to Mr. Carmichael 
who is justly proud of he trust committed to him.
