P. T. Smith of Elgin, who gave an arm to the lost cause and went to work with his empty sleeve on his farm as the old south was expiring and helped to build the present grand, glorious, independent New South, is a great lover of music and he delights in seeing his gallant son, Mr. W. O. Smith and his beautiful daughter, Miss Fleetie Smith, enjoy themselves, and his constant and faithful companion shares with him the pleasure of seeing the children, (a young man and young lady) have pleasure. On the 31st, day of December 1897, he annual feast was spread and every one present was served with refreshments as good as a king ever ate. The spacious table fairly groaned under its load of the choicest victuals known to the culinary art. These people have an excellent farm and well improved. They make it self sustaining and owe nothing. After the feast the young people danced in good earnest. Every body was perfectly sober and the young men deported themselves as becomes gentlemen. The music was grand. Mr. W. O. Moore performed on the organ and Messrs. Blandford and Pet Martin, Dock Childs, W. R. Spreeberry, W. D. Lavender and H. H. Vickers accompanied him on the violins, it was equal to a cornet band. The young ladies present were: Misses Fannie Hopkins, Hessie Morgan, Clyde Yancy, Clifford Treadwell, Mirad Thaxton, Ollie Collins, Fleetie Smith, Kittie Goddard, Minnie Morgan, Lizzie Hopkins, Eucalia McMichael, Fannie Thaxton, Alva Thaxton and Mrs. C. L. Thaxton. The young men present were: W. C. Smith, Clinton Hopkins, Fulton Washington, Edgar Lavender, C. L. Thaxton, W. R. Spreeberry, George Morgan, Lem Barnes, Newton Treadwell, A. M. Smith and many others whose names we could not learn. Mr. Smith was especially delighted with the music which was placed in a partition door while cotillions were running in either room. Four couples in one room and eight to the other, where your pencil pusher left the gay scene for home.
